WHEEL TALK PRESENTS – MATT REYES “THANK YOU FGFS”

Fixed Gear Freestyle has done a lot for me over the years and it still continues to give. Good times, chill vibes and an endless reason to explore new places. This video was filmed in the first few months of 2017 back when I still lived in San Francisco. Shout out to the homies Mike, Jaoa & Ramon for going out and filming. Shooting these things is always a team sport.

WHEEL TALK – ROLL UP & ROLL OUT NO.2

Roll Up & Roll Out Number 2 was a huge success. When Ernie & I got to the meetup spot I couldn’t believe that there were already a dozen people hanging out waiting for others to arrive. I thought there might be one or two more people since the last ride, but I was honestly wasn’t expecting 10 more people and 20 more wheels.

It’s really great to see that Portland has such a rad community of people on track bikes. We’ll have to keep the ball rolling on this and set up another ride this weekend. Just checked the weather. Looks like it’s a go. What do you think? Same time, same place, new destination? We’ll be there on Sunday at noon underneath the westside of the Burnside Bridge. Be there or be square.

Check out a bunch more photos of Slam Dunk Ernie & the gang below. See y’all this weekend. (more…)

WHEEL TALK – ROLL UP & ROLL OUT NO.1

What started out as me linking up to ride with Christian Shultz turned into me trying to get a group ride going at the last minute. I didn’t expect much of a turn out. In fact I didn’t expect a turnout at all, but I figured this was as good a chance as any to at least get the ball rolling on the whole idea. I want to get a more regular fixie meetup going here in Portland. Especially as the days get longer the countdown to summer begins.

We met up under the Burnside bridge, I let Ernie outta the bag to take a quick poo. After which he felt lighter in my backpack. We cruised around downtown for a hot minute make more stops than miles ridden. I caught a bunch of great photos of both Christian & Ryan Jennings’ track builds. I’ll have a bunch of photos of Ryan’s bike coming real soon, so keep your eyes peeled. Somehow we managed to stumbled across the Women’s March right as it was beginning it’s walk through town. I jumped into the mix and caught a couple quick snapshots of some of people in the crowd. The Trump & Putin sign was definitely a fan favorite. Portland loves to protest. We’ll have to get another one of these rides happening real real soon. Aiming for the next week or two I’ll keep y’all posted.

CRANKSGIVING 2017

I’m thankful for these two dudes. Every year, Toby, Bryan & I take the train back home for the holidays, and every year we do a little turkey trot around the outskirts of town. It’s never too long. Something quick, under 30, but there’s usually a fence to be hopped or cow paddy to dodge along the way. Midway through the ride we’ll pull off and take a moment to soak in the scenery. Usually that means pulling off at the nearest drainage ditch to catch some quick airs before we continue on our journey. There are a ton of spots like this peppered around town, some of which have transitions that are smoother than most skateparks I’ve been to.

At one point I saw a hawk chowing down on a rattlesnake so I hopped off my bike, dropped down to its level and started shooting photos. I army crawled closer and got within an arm’s length before the hawk started to flex and didn’t want anything to do with me any longer. I always forget how sick Toby’s Wheel Talk kit looks. We’re going to have to make a new one soon. Well, that’s it for this year. Check out more photos below, otherwise look forward to more next year.

SLAM DUNK ERNIE & THE CHROME INDUSTRIES WARSAW II

First things first, everyone follow @SLAMDUNKERNIE. Glad we got that outta the way. There’s a couple things that I never leave the house without, and this bag is one of them. Not only does it fit my entire life, it holds one of the most important pieces of it. Ernie. The Warsaw 2.0 from Chrome Industries has more pockets than you’d ever know what to do with, as well as a couple hidden stash pockets. Very important. It’s my go to travel bag, and fits overhead as a carry on. Even more important. Whether it’s 3 months, or 3 hours this bag is there through it all.

FIXED GEAR PORTLAND – THE 11th HOUR OF 2017

See ya never 2017. Yesterday the sun came out, the ice melted and the roads dried off. So Devin Tolman, Ramon Antonio & I grabbed our wheels and hit the streets hard. Apparently seeing the sun this time of year is a real rarity. I still don’t believe it yet. In my mind the sun is shining everyday. It’s just hidden beneath a thick layer of clouds is all.

I’ve harshed Portland for not being a real city since we got here. But everyday, little by little, I’m starting to see it. Especially in these photos of us riding around it’s downtown. I’m so used to shooting in direct sunlight, that it’s nice to be somewhere where it both looks and feels brick out.

Check out 20-something more photos below, and keep your eyes peeled for more fixie content coming straight outta Portland. 2018 is less than a day away and it can’t be here soon enough.

WHEEL TALK MOVES TO PORTLAND

Welcome to Portland. Earlier this Summer we packed our bags and moved outta San Francisco, setting our sights north to the PNW. Ramon Antonio showed me around the first couple days and played tour guide showing me some of what Portland has to offer. It’s always refreshing visiting, let alone moving to a different city. Here is some shaky handheld clips from the pocket cam we used to make all of our first videos. Buckle your seatbelt, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

RIDING GRAVEL WITH DUSTIN KLEIN – THE VIDEO

They told us to go kick rocks. So we did. The videos Dustin Klein has been making just keep getting better and better. It’s amazing how small and lightweight cameras have become. One minute it’s in your pocket the next it’s out and rolling. Perfect for on the bike, going the distance, no backpack type of rides. After seeing some stills in the post below, press play and take a look through Dustin’s lens.

MASH PARALLAX – TURNING OF THE TIDE

This doesn’t happen where I’m from. For starters the trees in San Francisco never change colors. They’re green year round. But here in Portland not only do the trees change, but so do the seasons. I’m still scared to see what winter brings, but we’re hopeful and optimistic. Yesterday the combination of light and trees looked so good that I dropped everything, grabbed my camera and shot these quick photos of my track build. It’s a MASH SF Parallax frame, for those who are wondering, but you probably already knew that. I’ll stop talking now, check out more below.
