FIXED FREESTYLE | SAN JOSE

The Fixed Gear scene in San Jose has hands down the largest community of freestyle riders I’ve ever seen. It’s the kind of place where people don’t just ride bikes, they ride fixed gear. Every time I go down there to ride it seems like there are more and more kids popping out of the woodwork. At this rate, it looks like Fixed Freestyle will be around for a long time to come.

A DAY IN SJ

Last weekend I took the train down to San Jose to do some riding and filming with everyone out there. Christian Hamrick just moved out to the West Coast and got a place in DTSJ w/ Mike Schmitt. It seems like everyone from the East Coast is making their way West. The top photo is a group shot of Hambone’s Bike, and the bottom is a shot of just about everyone. (Ed, Mike, Scott, Devon, Hamrick, Montoya, & Jeff)

TOP 10 PHOTOS OF 2011

Here’s my top 10 favorite photo’s I’ve taken over the last year. 2011 has been a big year for us, and we plan on making this year even better. The top 3 are photos you may have not seen yet, and the rest are from sessions throughout the year. Devon Lawson throws some of the most dialed barspins I’ve ever seen, here’s a great example of that. He’s made some big moves this year and has helped to make San Jose a power house in the Fixed Freestyle scene.I don’t know what it is about Jeff, but he is incredibly photogenic. I’ve always been able to catch such great shots of him. I love funky wallrides, especially ones on weird nooks & lips on the wall. Here’s a shot of Me (Matt Reyes) riding this double bank back behind this parking lot on one of the steepest hills in the city. It was so much wasted effort trying to ride this spot. Up hill battle the entire time (more…)

ALL FIXED COMP VIDEO

Chris from PlusSizeBMX put together this edit of the All Fixed Comp at this years SF Bike Expo. A ton of shit went down this year, and this video is merely a taste of the action, but I’m sure glad someone was there to cover it considering I had minor difficulties w/ my camera. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that the course was made up of mostly dirt jumps, making things a little more interesting, and showing that Fixed really is a cross between BMX (street) & MTB (dirt). It just gets better and better year after year, I can’t wait for the next SF Bike Expo.

SCOTT HORTON + SADIO

SADIO BIKES welcomes Scott Horton to the Team, as their newest addition to the International lineup. He’s been putting in work on his PFIX w/ Sadio Components ever since we got them in the mail a few months back. Scott pedals hard into everything he ride, and has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, the hop through the bars to peg ride being one of them. Check out his page on the Sadio site HERE.

A DAY IN SAN JOSE

Christian Hamrick put this together while he was back out here in the Bay a couple weeks ago. There are some great clips in here both b-roll and riding. Cunningham Skatepark is so big you could ride it every day and never get tired of it. You’re always finding something new, especially if you’re around the right kind of people. And right now, San Jose is the place to be for Fixed Freestyle. There is such a strong FGFS presence, and the scene is so huge that there are new kids popping up ever day.

FIXED FREESTYLE TRAILER

Here’s the trailer for a Fixed Freestyle documentary that I’ve been working on with riders from all over northern California (Ed Wonka, Josh Boothby, Matt Reyes, Mike Schmitt, Matt Montoya, Jakob Santos, Kenny Arimoto Jason Clary, Jeff Dempler, Scott Horton, Gonzo, Nick Price, & Gabe ) Focused on creating an understanding of the Fixed Freestyle scene & culture. Reasons why we ride, what makes it so unique & where we’re going to take it next.

SCREEN SHOTS

Here’s a bunch of Screen Shots I pulled from some footage I’ve shot this last month. From top to bottom, we got Mike & Ed rolling around down town San Jose. Next there’s Matt Montoya w/ one of the longest fakie wheelies I’ve ever seen. Forest Parker has those 180 bars on lock and makes throwing em’ over those orange cones look easy. Hang over tooths down handrails are an Ed Wonka specialty, here’s a shot of him serving one up proper. And last but not least, we have Joshua Boothby w/ a truely massive 360 over the handrail, landing into the grass bank. #butteronbutter Keep your eyes peeled for a couple edits coming out this week.
